Fasttage last date extended till February

The government has extended the FASTag deadline to 15 February 2021.  The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had earlier announced that from January 1, 2021, toll charges would be collected only through Fastag.  The time for 100 per cent tax collection from Fastag has now been extended to one and a half months, i.e. till February 15.

NHAI said that from January 1, cash collection at Toll Plaza will be closed and only Fastag will run.  Now the deadline has been extended.  It is believed that many motorists are still paying toll tax in cash.  The government wants tax collection to be done only through Fastag.  A separate sign has also been made for Fastag to make the toll plaza cashless.

Fastag is a radio frequency identification tag that is affixed to a vehicle's windscreen.  This tag, which is rechargeable and attached to a prepaid account / e-wallet, allows automatic deduction of charges at toll booths.  There is no need to stand at a toll plaza to make a payment.

Fastag was launched in the country in 2016 and four banks collectively released one lakh tags that year.  This was followed by seven lakh in 2017 and 34 lakh in 2018 through Fastag.  Fastag has been made mandatory for new four wheeler registration from 1 December 2017 as per the Central Motor Vehicle Act, 1989.
